As gas prices continue to rise without much relief in sight, we have options to help us off-set this situation. From changing our driving habits, car companies manufacturing and offering hybrid type vehicles for sale, or simply fixing up our current vehicles, we do have opportunity to save big money at the pump.
Driving habitsThe lighter your foot is on the gas pedal, the less fuel is consumed by the engine. A 7% increase was found in tests when cruise control was used. A steady speed at or less than the posted speed limit and not driving aggressively (quick acceleration and/or de-acceleration) is estimated to save anywhere between 12%-55% fuel consumption.
The modern day vehicle is much more efficient with engine start up. If you’re engine is going to idle for more than 10 seconds and your in a position to reasonably do so, turn your engine off. If there is a long line at the drive thru, park and walk inside.
HybridsPart gasoline engine, part electric, these new vehicles are increasingly popular as they not only consumer far less fuel then a conventional gasoline engine but also less tail pipe pollutants. –Hybrids are the transitional vehicles as we move towards operating full electric vehicles in years to come.
Vehicle maintenance and achieving optimum fuel economy
A clogged engine air filter can cost you 10% extra; equaling more than $.40 per gallon, and proper tire pressure can influence 3% which is estimated at $.12 per gallon. Check engine lights can dramatically decrease fuel economy and a faulty oxygen sensor as much as 40% loss; $1.60 a gallon. Test results have shown that a 19% fuel savings can be achieved by operating a properly maintained vehicle.
There are so many more ways to increase a vehicles fuel economy but unless you own a brand new hybrid, the best and least expensive way is to change driving habits for the better and having a professional and honest automotive specialty shop save you big money by properly maintaining your vehicle with genuine parts and premium fluids.
